Light Transmission & Lens Technologies

Each Pilla lens is named using a number and letter code. The number indicates the percentage of light transmission, a lower number means less light passes through (ideal for bright sun), while a higher number allows more light in for cloudy or low-light conditions. As we age, we often need more light to maintain sharp contrast, so it’s common to move up the scale over time in the various ranges for example from 15 to a 19 or a 56 to a 60.

The letters refer to the visual enhancement technologies built into the lens:

  • C – Chromashift for targeted colour filtration
  • ED – Enhanced Definition for crisp image detail
  • HC – High Contrast to make targets stand out
  • MX – Max technology for versatile, all-round enhancement
  • N – Neutraliser to mute dominant greens
  • P – Progressive filtration from top to bottom
  • DF – Depth Filter to enhance perceived target separation
  • M – Mirrored coating to reduce overhead glare
  • D – Dark base to limit glare and add definition
  • K – Killer contrast for bold separation between foreground and background
  • X – Xtreme filtration for high-performance clarity in challenging light

Understanding these technologies helps you build a tailored kit that suits your eyes, lighting, and environment.

Choosing the Right Lens for You

Pilla’s core range of around 30 lenses is available for both the Outlaw X6 and Outlaw X7 platforms. Some specialist lenses, like the RG series, are exclusive to one platform. The X6 offers a wraparound field of view with full coverage, while the X7 delivers a floating, rimless lens feel. For platform compatibility and suggestions, see our Buying Guide.

Many shooters build a kit of three lenses to handle most lighting conditions:

  • A high sun lens (9.5–25% transmission)
  • A medium light lens (26–55%)
  • A low light lens (56% and above)

A colour-based kit of Yellow, Orange, and Purple also provides great coverage for varied UK weather. As your vision changes with age or experience, you might find that a higher transmission lens becomes more comfortable, even in brighter light.

Specialist Pilla Lenses: RGHL, RGLL, 39CIG & More

Pilla’s RGHL and RGLL lenses are designed to help shooters with colour recognition deficiency. These specialist lenses boost reds and oranges while muting greens, making targets easier to pick out in woodland or foliage-heavy environments. RGHL is suited to full sun-to-medium light, while RGLL is ideal for mid-to-low light. Both are exclusive to the X6 platform. If you’re an X7 user, the 39CIG lens offers a Chromashift-based alternative with similar visual benefits.

Other notable specialist lenses include:

  • 98AR – Pilla’s brightest lens, offering maximum light transmission for extreme low-light or overcast conditions
  • 42CDKX – A high-contrast green lens, using Chromashift-Dark-Killer-Xtreme technology to enhance clarity in challenging mid-light with mixed or green-heavy backgrounds

Green lenses, once overlooked, have surged in popularity as shooters recognise their value in neutralising backgrounds and improving mid-light performance.

Frequently Asked Questions – Pilla Lenses

Q: What do the numbers and letters mean in Pilla lens names?
A: The number is the light transmission percentage. The letters refer to the technology used, such as Chromashift (C), Enhanced Definition (ED), Neutraliser (N), and more.

Q: Are RGLL and RGHL lenses available for the X7?
A: No. They are exclusive to the X6. The 39CIG is a strong Chromashift-based alternative for X7 users.

Q: Does eye colour or age affect which lens I should choose?
